A 300-tonne module is hard to lose. The crate with its anchor bolts is not.
On large EPC projects I treat documentation as cargo. If the packing list is wrong, the shipment is wrong, whatever arrives on the quay.
My rule of thumb: one package, one number, from the supplier's workshop to the installation point. The same ID on the packing list, the marking, the shipping documents and the site receipt. When engineering, procurement and the forwarder each invent their own reference, you spend weeks reconciling spreadsheets instead of building.
So agree the packing list format and marking standard in the purchase order, not after the first shipment lands. And make tracking visible to construction, because they are the ones waiting.
Dull? Perhaps. Still cheaper than searching a laydown area with a torch.
